The election?

I'm curious to know, what are your thoughts of having Dumas Simeus run for president of haiti? Do you think he can do for haiti what so many leaders have failed to do? Or is he being a bit idealistic in thinking that he could turn haiti around if elected?

If Simeus (who I don't know ANYTHING about) makes corruption-busting his #1 priority, then perhaps it could work. That didn't start happening in the U.S. until Theodor Roosevelt was president, and it wasn't really effective until after WWII. Even now, we have problems with it (Hariet Miers, anyone?)

Unfortunately, until the culture of graft/corruption/cronyism/kleptocracy gets straightned out in Haitian politics, no one is going to be able to turn things around.

the man's being obviously idealistic

Making things worse is easily done but changing this country and making it a better place for haitians to live in cannot be done by a president alone. I believe that when the Haitian people will finally really want to change their country then they will the ones to turn it around.

Re: the man's being obviously idealistic

I do not see any of the other candidates that has a better plan than him. Haitians need to realize that Haiti cannot continue to keep going back like this.
He has a vision with a plan for Haiti.

Re: the man's being obviously idealistic

That is so idiotic. Change my friend in a country as corrupted as Haiti, start with enforcing the rule of law and for that to happen you need a responsible government. If any haitian citizen has a plan to rule out corruption, bring people together, protect and preserve the right of every citizen, to build infrastructure as well openning the country to investors, then by all means, let's support such a man. Change cannot be done by a president alone, but it can begin with an ideology or a system. The people should not vote the man, but his vision.

Re: the man's being obviously idealistic

My wife and I worked with Mr. Simeus back in the 1960s and early 1970s when he was on our fair housing board here in Orange County, California. He was an idealist in that he believed he could make this a better place for black people in a county that was mostly white and typically racist like the rest of the country at that time. But, he put this idealism to work and he had the courage to file law suits against apartment house owners that discriminated. He simply would not put up with people that discriminated on the basis of someones race. He served for a number of years on our board while he worked at Standard Oil and Rockwell International. To give you an idea of the kind of person he is, I will tell you a short story about this powerful and intelligent man. He was at our home to have lunch and talk about some housing issue when my wife mentioned that a nearby apartment house manager discriminated against a black couple. The couple did not want to go through the pain of filing a law suit. He asked us for the address and before he took his first bite of lunch he was off in his car. About 15 minutes later he was back. We asked what happened. He simply said that the manager will not discriminate again. End of story.

I left Haiti in the early 80's when I was 17 years old. Today most of the freinds I grew up and went to school with live outside of Haiti. Just like me, most of my friends are working professionals who hope they will retire or play a role in the development of Haiti.

Although we may be citizens of other nations, we are first and foremost concerned Haitians. I will encourage Mr Simeus to continue to make the case that " we want a role in the leadership of our country".

ON Simeus

Lawens from RI
Well, Its all about making a change in our future.. Over the past 15, 20 years. We have invested in different political parties to turn the country around. We even invested in a priest who had good intentions but no political backgrounds. In the end, we paid for it. I think, this is what Haiti and the Diasporas overseas have been waiting for. I think Haiti has been waiting for her son or daughter to travel around the world, to learn other countries fruits and return to Haiti to share that fruit. I looked at Mr. simeus's resume, he does have connections with the world and the education background to turn the country around. I cant imagine, Mr. Simeus is in it for the money. After reading his plans for Haiti, i fully endorse him to be the next President of Haiti.. (Lawens Fevrier)in RI or.. lawens@hotmail.com
